Meniscal transplantation is a type of surgery in which the damaged meniscus is replaced with the donor cartilage. The new meniscus is taken from a human cadaver donor. The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage ring that act like a cushion between your shinbone and thighbone. Each of your knees has two menisci – one on the inside and one on the outside of your knee. The menisci also provide stability to the knee. A torn meniscus is a common knee injury that usually occurs because of trauma particularly in athletes. A torn meniscus may also occur in older adults because of degenerative changes of the knee. With the absence of meniscus you are more likely to develop persistent pain, swelling, and arthritis.
